Maths

Mathematics, a vital and integral part of the curriculum, is experienced by children at their appropriate level, fulfilling the requirements of the National Curriculum.

  • using and applying maths
  • number
  • algebra
  • shape and space
  • handling data

In Mathematics our target is for children to achieve the highest level of proficiency in a wide variety of skills, techniques and concepts, necessary to ensure they are numerate, understand the application of mathematical ideas and can think for themselves.
The courses in Mathematics are constructed to cater for differing ability groups. They follow the National Curriculum for Mathematics and are designed in accordance with the National Strategies for the delivery of Numeracy in Key Stage 3. In Years 10 and 11 students work towards GCSE, and OCR Numeracy qualifications.

Mental maths, investigations and problem solving are seen as very important in both key stages, as is the development of pencil and paper methods and the appropriate use of calculators. The fundamentals are well taught.
Maths lessons regularly provide opportunity for collaborative as well as independent work, and students are actively encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning.
Mathematics is studied by all students in Years 7 to 11, as an essential part of their preparation for adult life, to prepare those who go on to further study, and to support the learning of other school subjects. We hope that students will enjoy Mathematics and experience success, and see it as relevant to their needs. and numeracy skills and other areas of the curriculum.
